English Learning

English learners (ELs) are a diverse population of students who are learning English in school. They come from numerous cultural and economic backgrounds and a variety of linguistic backgrounds. ELs demonstrate unique language, academic, and social-emotional needs and require different kinds of support to succeed in the classroom.

Our EL Program

You can learn about our EL program by reading our Language Instruction Educational Program Plan. The goal of the SCRED EL program is to provide academic English language support to multilingual learners so they can acquire the skills and knowledge to achieve their academic, linguistic, and personal potential. This includes meeting the same challenging academic standards all Minnesota students are expected to meet.

The EL Program promotes the beliefs that English learning happens across contents and curricula, all teachers are teachers of English learners, and multilingualism is an asset.  Additionally, our English Language licensed teacher provides a variety of evidence-based language instruction to students, along with support and consultation to classroom/content teachers to ensure the success of our EL students.

ELs take the WIDA ACCESS tests each year. When we get their scores in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, we plot them on a Can Do table, which helps us to set appropriate learning goals for the academic year.

The test is broken up into the grade clusters of PreK-K, 1-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

ELs who take the WIDA ACCESS test each year seem most challenged by the writing portion of the four tests. Valorie Arrowsmith maintains a resource website of writing tools to help provide extra attention to this domain and support students.

Teaching to the test was not the intent, rather, she tried to find writing tools that could be recycled all through their lives.
